Kenka Bancho Otome: Girl Beats Boys

Hello, people who may or may not like pink-haired protagonists, this review is for you. Check out my take on Kenka Bancho Otome!

Why did I start watching Kenka Bancho Otome?

Small confession, one of my first and favorite animes of all time is Ouran Highschool Host Club (OHSHC). After I finished the show the first time (I’ve watched it four times and every time I find something new to enjoy every time), I felt this void where I wanted to find another show just like it so I started watching a bunch of reverse harem animes (1 girl, multiple guys). This anime is one of the results of my search for another OHSHC.

Although it’s not as good as OHSHC (a lot of them aren’t) this one did get a 7/10 from me on at the time I watched so…it’s not the worst. However, other people did rank it anywhere from a 2 to a 10 which is one of the most diverse rankings I’ve seen in a while.  Anyway, below is what I had to say after recently watching it (and not months later like this intro).

Before her first day of high school, Hinako meets Hiraku, her long-lost brother who has a request: to switch places with him. He doesn’t want to go to his fighting high school. She does and makes friends by fighting them.

Things I liked in Kenka Bancho Otome:

  • The main character
  • The guys get their own development with her
  • Backstories are nice touches
  • The friendships forged through boss fights.

Things I didn’t like:

  • The main character can kick a## and yet can be coerced so easily to swap places with a guy who looks just like her.
  • How did her secret stay a secret???

Things I am not sure about:

  • The length of the episodes. I can’t tell if I like it or hate it. The anime isn’t slow by any means there are boss fights around every corner which is cool. They even have a bonding episode which was cool.
  • the way they break the fourth wall. It’s weird and I don’t think I’ve seen another anime that does anything like it.
