PS I Love You

Hello people, who may or may not feel like they need a good cry, this review is for you. Check out my take on PS I Love You!
I know I’m late to the party in terms of reviewing this movie since it came out in 2007 but I just saw PS I Love You for the first time. Just as a warning, you will cry. A lot. Like, this movie is 2 hours and 6 minutes of crying. You think you are signing up for a cute romance movie but NO.
What is PS I Love You about?
It does start out cute, focusing on a married couple consisting of Gerard Butler (Gerry) and Hilary Swank (Holly). He’s hot and Irish and then he’s dead. (Does it count as a spoiler if this movie came out over 10 years ago and it happens in the first 5-10 minutes?) Also just as a warning parents there are a couple of sex scenes but it is rated PG-13 so do with that information what you will.
When I watched the movie I wasn’t quite sure what his cause of death was but I started to not care as I watched Holly bawl her eyes out and grieve profusely. Not going to lie, I grieved with her. I’ve never been married but I know what it feels like to have someone you care about ripped from the land of the living. It sucks.
Suddenly she receives a message from her dead husband who letters in advance to help her after his death. I was shocked, angry. I didn’t think that this plan of his would help her cope at all. But I kept watching. I watched as the messages led her on this journey, having her do things outside of her comfort zone, encouraging her to get a new job, go on a trip with her gal pals, meet not one but two new potential love interests.
Gradually, my opinion of what he did changed. I didn’t think it was selfish or terrible. Then she got the last letter and she had potential new love interest #1 read it. It was full of self-love and good wishes to her new lover. I thought, “This is it, she chose him as her new lover”. And then…she didn’t. And you know what? I’m glad. At that moment, she didn’t need a new man, she found passion in her life again after feeling the weight of her grief for so long. Some of you may disagree but I loved the ending of this movie.
Things I liked:
- the funeral (what can I say? I love Irish music)
- trip to Ireland
- potential love interest #1 and #2
- the ending
- her gal pals
- the music
- Holly’s character development
- Holly’s mom
Things I didn’t like:
- the amount of ugly crying you do because of the flashbacks of Holly and Gerry’s relationship
- Potential love interest #1’s sense of humor
Overall, I rate this movie an 8/10. Thank you for reading “PS I Love You”. Comment below if you like this movie and who your favorite love interest is. If you like the content I make, consider subscribing to my mailing list and if you like this, check out a similar post here.
