A Short Hike: Short And Cozy

So you know how we all went/are going through the virus-that-shall-not-be-named? I played this game at some point during this time period to give myself a break from school. Today, we’ll be talking about “A Short Hike”.

Who made A Short Hike

A Short Hike is an indie game made by Adam Robinson-Yu. The website for A Short Hike is here and his website is here.


A Short Hike is about a bird hiking up a mountain because her cell is out of service. At first, you don’t know a lot about this bird, you kind of wonder why she’s living with her park ranger aunt. What starts off a game with one distinct goal turns into a more complex game with exploration and side quests to collect feathers to help go up the mountain. The game won’t take you too long to play, I think I beat it in ~3ish hours. A Short Hike is just delightful by nature. The characters you meet are adorable and have distinct personalities. I liked the fishing mechanic and how it was introduced–even if I wasn’t good at it. I liked the kid selling feathers to pay for college (too relateable). The lady painting the scenery, I was sympathetic to. All of it was cute and wholesome and what I needed to play. I can’t think of a single thing I disliked about this game.

Game Mechanics

For a short second, I want to nerd out about the feather mechanic. It’s so clever. It allows you to save yourself so you can use it as a multi-jump. When climbing up the first time, it’s kind of difficult, but the more feathers you collect, the easier it becomes. You do have to do multiple climbs because certain items can only be found in specific places. The feather mechanic makes the climb not feel like a chore. In the higher altitudes, you are freezing your tail feathers off and need to find hot springs or fire to stay warm. It affects the feathers you caught. Honestly, my favorite mechanic besides the glide. The glide took me a hot minute to master because if you don’t hold it, you can just nose dive which is fun. Once you master these two mechanics, you don’t really need any other mechanic. You can do plain climbing but I see that mechanic as a way to be more efficient at the climb than necessary. That being said, it’s cool all three mechanics can cater to different play styles.
